Christian William Quanz – New York

             My grandmother, Therese Elizabeth Quanz, was the only child of Elizabeth Hazen and Anton Joseph Quanz, the youngest child of Christian William Quanz and Mary Magdalina Flood.  I know only that Christian William Quanz was Prussian.  I do not know the nationality of Mary. 

 Christian Quanz was a successful box manufacturer in Manhattan and had 4 children, two boys and two girls, Fredrick, Mary, Anna and Anton.  Fredrick would later marry Elizabeth Hazen's younger sister, Therese.  I am told but have not yet verified that Anton and Fredrick were in the silk importing business together and amassed a huge fortune.  I do know that my grandmother's family was very wealthy.  Anton died when she, my grandmother, was quite young -- I think about 16 years old.  I do not know if Fredrick and Therese had children or what became of Mary or Anna.  I do not know became of the silk business either.

             My grandmother married Henry Eyre of Rye, NY and had four children.  Elizabeth Hazen Eyre Taylor, Shirley Eyre Knapp, and twins, Jane Eyre Repp and, my father, Henry Eyre Jr.  They lived in Greenwich, CT and Rye, NY.  The girls attend Miss Porters School and then married.  My father attended Taft and then Yale University.  My father worked for many years in the construction industry, owning his own company, which he sold in the late 1980s. 

 After the death of my mother from cancer in 1993, he remarried and now lives between Manhattan and Hudson, NY, where he and my step-mother raise racehorses.  I am one of four children.  Myself, Lucy Hazen Eyre Lindeyer (North Granby, CT - married with 4 children), Therese Leigh Eyre (New Bedford, MA - single with significant other), William Blount Eyre, (Dorset, VT - married with 2 children) and Melanie Myers Eyre Christie (San Jose, CA - separated with 2 children).  

  Unfortunately, my grandmother didn't save much and I have nothing except a few photos of Anton. I know nothing of his brother or sisters and little of his father -- nothing of his mother.  I have found one document which states that Christian, Anton's father, was Prussian but that is all.

I have been to New York to search documents in hopes of finding Christian and Mary's marriage certificate but there was a great fire and the building in which the records where held were burnt down along with all the records around the time I would assume they were married (1854-56). 

  In the 1870 census, Frederick was 14 years old.  Do you know what religion they were?  If so, were they devout?  I could start searching church records.

 I appreciate any help you can give me. And I truly enjoyed your history!  The pictures are wonderful.
