John (Quanz) Quince Family of New Jersey

John Quince (Johannes Quanz), father of Seely F. Quince, was born in Bockenan (Buchenau? jq), Kurhessen, Germany, August 10, 1824, and came to this country, arriving July 17, 1846 with his brother Johann "Adam" Quanz.

He married Doris Nickal July 9, 1854 in First German Presbyterian Church Rivington Street, New York City, New York. Doris Nickal (Nicol) was born in Windsheim, Nuremberg, Germany, May 9, 1828, and died at Bevans, February 19, 1890.

Johannes Quanz changed the spelling of his name to John Quince. All his descendants have followed that spelling.

After living in New York City for a time he came to Sussex County, New Jersey, and settled in Bevans, Sandyston Township, where he was a cooper during the remainder of his active life. After the death of his wife he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Lewis R. Congleton, at Monroe, New Jersey, where he died January 14, 1913, and is buried in North Church Burial Ground.

They were the parents of the following children:

1. John, born March 21, 1855, is living in Sussex, where he formerly served as postmaster.

2. William Henry, born February 8, 1858, is a merchant in Baleville.

3. Emma Elizabeth, born April 25, 1860, married (first) John Hendershot; (second) William Struble. She is living in Swartswood, New Jersey, where she is postmaster.

4. Anna M., born June 10, 1862, married Aaron Kays, and is living at Monroe, New Jersey.

5. Seely F., was born at Bevans, Sandyston Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, October 10, 1864.

6. Marilda H., born April 29, 1867, married Lewis R. Congleton, proprietor of a general store in Monroe, New Jersey.

7. George V., born September 30, 1869, died May 21, 1910.

Johannes Quanz was born on August 10, 1824 in Buchenau, KurHessen, Germany. He emigrated to North America with his brother John in 1846.

William Henry Quince

A leading merchant, as he is a citizen, of his district, William Henry Quince, of Baleville, Sussex County, New Jersey, is widely known throughout his part of the country. Besides conducting a well-equipped store, he has been postmaster and has served the community in many public offices.

His father, John Quince, was born in Bockenan (Buchenau?), Kurhessen, Germany, August 10, 1824, and came to this country, arriving July 17, 1846. After he lived for a time in New York City he moved to Bevans, Sandyston Township, Sussex County, where the remainder of his active life was spent while he engaged in his trade as cooper. His years of retirement were spent with his daughter, Mrs. Lewis R. Congleton, at Monroe, New Jersey, where he died January 14, 1913. He is buried in North Church Burial Ground. He married Doris Nicol, born in Windsheim, Nuremberg, Germany, May 9, 1828, and died at Bevans, February 19, 1890. They were the parents of the following children: John, William Henry, Emma Elizabeth, Anna M., Seely F., Marilda H., George V. Quince.

William Henry Quince was born in Millerville, Sandyston Township, Sussex County, and attended school at Bevans, living at home until h reached the age of nineteen. He then came over the mountains to live and found employment at farming with John Simmons, with who he remained for ten years and two months. He then became associated with a creamery for a period of nine years, part of then time in Sussex County, two years in Massachusetts, and five at Deposit, New York. Returning then to Sussex County he settled at Baleville in 1898, and purchased the George Harris property. There he has since conducted a profitable mercantile business. He was postmaster at Baleville until the local office was discontinued, and he was township committeeman in Hampton Township for sixteen years. He is a liberal and active member of the Baleville Christian Church.

William Henry Quince married Maggie Simmons, daughter of Zacharias Simmons, of a prominent Lafayette Township family, and they are well known in their part of Sussex County.

Seely F. Quince

One of the most active and best known men of Sussex County, New Jersey, is Seely F. Quince, of the town of Sussex, who is engaged in the hardware business there. He is owner of the leading establishment of his line in the county, and is also one of the most active of public officials, having served in numerous office, including that of mayor of Sussex. At the present time he is water superintendent, in which office he has served, with the exception of two years, since 1896, and he is also a commissioner of High Point Park.

Seely F. Quince, son of John and Doris (Nicol) Quince, was born at Bevans, Sandyston Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, October 10, 1864, and received his education in the local district schools. As a boy, even while attending school, he was employed among various farmers of this locality, and when his school days were over he continued his agricultural activities in the employ of others until he was twenty-two years of age.

He then entered the employ of Daniel Bailey, at Glenwood, as a clerk, but after gaining a fair amount of experience he made a change and came to Sussex, where he entered the employ of Senator Jacob Gould, with whom he remained as clerk for a period of eleven years.

At the end of that time he became associated with Jacob L. Lawrence & Sons as clerk in their hardware store and later became a member of the concern known as the Lawrence Hardware Company and this connection he continued for a period of fifteen years. By the end of that time he was well qualified to engage in the hardware business for himself, and in 1919 he established his present business at Sussex. He carries a general line of hardware, farm implements, etc., and has a large and convenient store. His business has grown rapidly, and has become the leading concern of its kind in the county.

Along with his business Mr. Quince has been active in public affairs. He gives his support to the principles and candidates of the Democratic Party, and has held many local offices. He has served as water superintendent of the borough of Sussex since 1896, with the exception of two years, and is still (1927) (63 years old) filling that office, this year making a total of twenty-nine years in office. In 1911 he was appointed a member of the Sussex County Tax Board by Governor Wilson (later President of the United States), and this office he filled with credit for a period of six years.

He was elected a member of the Board of Freeholder in 1920, and in this capacity, too, he served for six years, during four of the six years being director of the board. In 1924 he was elected mayor of the town of Sussex, in which office he served 1924-25. During his term of office he motorized the fire department and has made other improvements in the equipment for fire fighting, and it was through his efforts that the present fine, new city building was erected.

In 1927 Mr. Quince was appointed by Governor A. Harry Moore to serve on the High Point Park Commission, and Mr. Quince is well qualified to serve in this capacity with exceptional efficiency. Mr. Quince has served as a member of the Democratic Committee for many years, and is one of the most active and public-spirited citizens of Sussex County.

Fraternally, Mr. Quince is identified with Lodge No. 1097, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and with the Junior Order United American Mechanics; and his religious affiliation is with the Presbyterian Church.

Seely F. Quince was married to Mary Smalley in 1890, daughter of Calvin J. and Margaret (Van Sickle) Smalley, of Colesville, Sussex County, New Jersey. The father, Calvin J. Smalley, was a veteran of the Civil War, serving as a corporal in Company H, 27th Regiment, of the New Jersey Volunteers, for nine months. His father was James Smalley, who married Lydia Decker. They have no children.
